As part of the tradition of the great Benin Kingdom, the Oba of Benin is expected to take four wives during his coronation rites before he picks a new name and ascend the throne.
It might interest you to know that since the coronation rite started the crown Prince/ Oba who already have three wives prior to his coronation ceremony has already picked two young virgins, he wishes to be his wives. One from Uselu and the other from Ugoula.
The crown Prince / new Oba will be leaving for uzama later today to perform some rites as well choose the third virgin bride.
The Oba is expected to choose the fourth virgin wife before the 19th of October which happens to be the grand coronation ceremony where he is expected to choose a name and ascend the throne.
There is no age restrictions on the brides to be chosen. If any of the chosen brides is not yet mature to perform her conjugal duties, she will be kept in a particular place in the palace till she is ripe for her duties.
Prior to the 19th the Oba has not and would not utter any word in public as is the tradition of the great Benin Kingdom. The first word he will say is his new name.
After choosing his new name and before the public announcement , the Oba is expected to plant a tree in Sakponba. The tree can only be cut off when the king is no more. As long as the Oba lives, the tree lives! Oba gha to Kpe e, Ise!!!
